Power lines, restrooms will leave Devil’s Den

Power lines feeding the restroom at Devils Den in Gettysburg National Military Park are being removed this year, as part of a multi-million dollar plan to restore the 6,000-acre Civil War park to its 1863 appearance.
The 75-year-old restroom is being removed too, in a project valued at about $500,000.
According to GNMP Interim Supt. Mel Poole, the Gettysburg Foundation — the park’s fundraising and management partner — has raised money to underwrite the project at no cost to taxpayers.
“The building is in a sensitive location for the environment and for the historic scene,” Poole said in a written statement Monday. Continue reading →

GEHS PURCHASES WARNING SIGNS

New trail warning signs.  These will be placed at both ends of a work area to warn approaching riders that a work detail is in progress.  We have purchased 4 of these signs so that if we are working at 2 different locations we can sign each of them.

Foundation president quits

After three months on the job, Richard Buchanan is leaving the Gettysburg Foundation.doc4b602f0bf3c61761971623
Buchanan announced his departure as foundation president in a four paragraph press release issued at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
No reason was given.
Buchanan was hired in October 2009 to replace Bob Wilburn, who led the fundraising and management partner of Gettysburg National Military Park for nine years. Continue reading →

Cyclorama may temporarily close

There is a structural flaw with the ceiling of the new $103 million Battlefield Visitor Center, that is causing water to damage portions of the Cyclorama painting.
Condensation is dripping onto “minimal areas” of the historic painting, which Congress recently spent $16 million to restore.
Gettysburg National Military Park spokeswoman Katie Lawhon described the problem as a “short-term” issue. Continue reading →
